The performance of the IBR has proven to be equal to and generally better than other anaerobic digester types in terms of volatile solids destruction and gas production, achieving these results in 1/4th the time.  In addition, the gas quality of a high rate system is typically better with a methane content of 65-70% typical and an H2S content generally less than 800 ppm.  The IBR system is also compatible with co-digestion of manure with other organic waste streams.

The Induced Blanket Reactor can be used with influent materials with up to 10% solids.  The IBR can also be used with lower solids materials, even waste from flush systems.  In the case of low solids waste streams, pre-digestion solids separation to increase solids concentration is suggested to keep the system size small and to maximize the overall energy balance of the system.

Faster Digestion Times:  The Induced Blanket Reactor is a high rate digester, completing the digestion process in less time than other digester types, typically in 5 days.  This is accomplished by creating a bacteria rich environment through which the influent stream must pass.  With a greater bacteria concentration, digestion of a given amount of feed material can be effected in a shorter period of time.  Special features in the IBR tank contribute to the retention of bacteria and thus enrichment of the reactor.  The vertical column design of the IBR increases the length of the path of concentrated bacteria through which material must travel.  More contact means more digestion.  Bacteria in the reactor thrive because of excellent environmental controls and because they are constantly being fed new material.

Methane Quality:  The quality of methane generated by a high rate system is typically higher than gas produced by traditional systems.  The higher rate of digestion allows less time for the other major component of biogas, CO2, to form.  The methane content of IBR gas is typically 65-70% vs. 50-60% from other systems.  The H2S component is also better, generally 800 ppm or lower.
